I'm the National Tax Director for a large Transportation company. We used to outsource our indirect taxes, i.e. property, sales/use, licenses... I wanted to insource this work from our outside tax advisors. Our HR Department placed several ads on job websites to fill this position. Unfortunately, we received many responses I found that none of the candidates were a good fit.
We then contacted a large accounting recruitment firm to assist. They sent over several candidates but none of them were the right person to fill this position. In fact, some of them were appallingly unprofessional and unqualified. The recruiter should have done a better job screening.
At this point I wasted almost four months trying to find a candidate. Under pressure to fill this position I contacted Howie. I was very pleasantly surprised when he sent me resumes for eight or nine very competent people. I then invited several to the office for interviews. All of these people could have filled the role but I narrowed down the list to the three best candidates.
After a round of second interviews with these three we chose a candidate. He has been working for me for two years now. The insourcing of this indirect tax compliance has been a success. We have more control over this function and we are less dependent on our outside CPA firm.
Furthermore, I was able to present to the US CFO that we have been able to have substantial savings from this hire.
Howie knows his candidates. I should have used him from the start as I would have saved a lot of time and aggravation.
